What is your favorite type of client? While all of them are equally important, I just love working with tech-savvy people! It’s always a great pleasure for me to have conversations with individuals who deeply understand technical specifics and can even challenge your knowledge of some details. And if they also possess great soft skills (especially open-mindedness), it’s a true find. Why do I love these features in my customers? Usually, such individuals know exactly what they need for their projects. Given that we are technical professionals too, it’s easier to identify the challenges that need to be tackled and find common ground. Birds of a feather flock together, as they say. The one click effect. Why people always think Software and Web development is easy? Through my career in IT this phenomena has always fascinated me. What is your opinion, why? I think we should blame large software companies for smothering us with their mobile and desktop operating systems. 😁 The end user is so used to having continuous integration and delivery of new features, done so seamlessly, that it creates the illusion of ease. The flexibility of Sulu CMS - The Symfony Content Management Platform is its biggest strength for us and our customer projects. In a recent project, we tried using the IONOS S3 offering as media data storage in Sulu CMS to simplify the infrastructure. 4XX: 405 - Not allowed It was a long journey, we arrived at the hotel, checked in, and accessed the guest elevator, and we saw a pretty lady, so we decided to follow her to her room… of course, the husband was there reminding us we were not allowed! We have already seen a few codes, like 401 (not allowed to enter the hotel), and 403 (not allowed to enter the staff), in this case, we are in the room area, which we are allowed, however, we are only permitted to enter our OWN room. Originally 405 is seldom used and not used in this context, this is my own receipt. Nonetheless, it is an issue in which all applications have got a specific code error to verify that accomplishing this security concern is relevant. On LinkedIn, you can see other people’s posts, but you can not edit them. In WhatsApp, you can not read messages which are not directed to you (or to a group you are in). Projects I'm especially proud of are also the ones I complained the most about. The CEO of a dev shop I used to work for at the time as a developer was quite a visionary, coming to our team with all kinds of different projects and feature requests. We wished that most of them had been consulted with us prior to being promised to the client, coming up with a bunch of - usually valid - reasons why it should be handled differently. 🛑 "This shouldn't be used in this way!" 🛑 "It's not meant to handle that kind of traffic." 🛑 "It's ugly. We'll never refactor it to make this better." It was obvious to all of us that the job needed to get done. So, after a few rounds of complaints, we always managed to sit down and get constructive about the challenge. There is some art in the creative process of gluing two different products together, so that neither of them breaks. Or finding a way to alter the behavior of an app that was already pushed to the store (without the ability to update it), a few hours prior to a huge event. The point is, we always somehow came up with a solution. We would have never agreed to develop features we considered impossible if we had been asked for our opinion. The "sell first, worry later" approach put us against the wall, in the good sense. 👉 Was it pretty? Usually not. 👉 Was it working? Pretty much. 👉 Did it deliver value to the client, using the tools we had at the time? Yes, it did. There's no doubt that doing the tech right is an important factor in the product's success. But especially with early-stage startups, when the product needs to handle two different behaviors depending on the investor you're pitching, putting the development in a strict structure early on might not always be the best for the business. Thinking about this CEO, I have a ton of appreciation for their work. I'm feeling insanely grateful to have participated in those projects, as I'm just starting to notice how much it shaped me over the years. -- And in the picture, a glimpse of those days: a working session at 3 am, ensuring the app works as expected. #softwaredevelopment #startups #technology
